Huskies Away From Home
Huskies Away from Home was established in fall of 2005 to help incoming out-of-state students make connections with upperclassmen from out-of-state and from the state of Connecticut. The main focus of Huskies Away from Home is to help new out-of-staters become acclimated to UConn and the community of Storrs by creating a supportive social network to help students feel more at home.
Find information on 1-on-1 peer mentors, state and region contact information, intramural teams, social events, and other great opportunities for involvement within the organization!
Welcome Incoming First-Year and Transfer Students!
Congratulations on your enrollment at the University of Connecticut. We’re happy you have taken the first step in this exciting journey and are here to help you with your transitions to UConn and the Storrs community. With Huskies Away from Home you can register for an upperclass student to help answer questions before you get to UConn. This mentor will keep in contact with you throughout your entire first year and serve as an added resource.
In addition to answering some of your initial questions, Huskies Away from Home is a great way to branch out, meet new people, and get involved in different things on campus. We have planned social events, especially during those first few weeks of the semester, to really help you connect with other students. For example, in the past we have gone ice skating, played on intramural teams, attended comedy shows, and had dinner as a group.
We encourage you to get involved with this unique opportunity! We look forward to meeting you at the Husky WOW Out-of-State Student Welcome Reception on Sunday, August 24th at 3:00pm in Rome Ballroom. Please click “register now” to join us!

Do you remember how it felt to leave home and arrive at an out-of-state school where you were surrounded by new people, places, and things? Are you interested in becoming a mentor to help new students through this transition? We are looking for caring, energetic individuals who are willing to help new students transition to college and life at UConn
Expected commitment is for the full academic year. Training begins at the end of the spring semester and is continual throughout the year. Enthusiasm, independence, reliability, and strong communication skills are expected. All majors are welcome to apply, so please take the time to fill out the following information.
Please note that since we do not know how many freshmen will request a 1-on-1 mentor we cannot guarantee a match. Likewise, we may have more freshmen than mentors in which case you will be paired with more than one new student. We will try our best to accommodate everyone interested in participating.

What Huskies Away from Home Mentors Hope to Gain
I hope to be of great help to these new students coming into UConn. I feel that if I had chosen to have a Huskies Away from Home mentor my freshman year, I would have felt better about my transition and more comfortable with my surroundings. I hope to offer this level of comfort to my mentee.
