Division Sustainability Committee

Division Initiatives – Sustainability

Presented by the Strategic Planning Sub Committee on Divisional Initiatives to Dr. John R. Saddlemire, Vice President for Student Affairs.

Recommendations for the Committee appointed to address this critical issue:

Develop a divisional plan to position the Division as “sustainable”

Objectives:

  1. Assess the current practices of the Division with respect to environmental and social consciousness and identify a divisional philosophy of what it means to be an environmentally and socially conscious division. (summer 2008)

    1. It is recommended to the Vice President to form a task force comprised of division managers and staff with the charge of assessing current practices and developing the divisional philosophy.
    2. It is recommended that the task force work closely with University leadership and our fellow divisions in crafting the philosophy.
  2. Develop a plan to catalogue, market and communicate current green practices and policies within the Division.
    1. It is recommended to the Vice President that the above appointed task force work with current communication related committees within the division to achieve this goal.
  3. Identify policies and practices that need to be addressed and develop a plan for change.
    1. It is recommended the above task force be charged with this additional task once the initial objectives are complete.
    2. It is recommended that the task force work closely with University leadership and our fellow divisions in coordinating and developing the plan.

Sustainability Committee Goals 2008-2009

  1. Departmental Assessments. Individual departments in student affairs will invite staff from the Office of Environmental Policy to conduct an assessment of practices and hold a presentation on recommendations for sustainable strategies for the future.
  2. Student Office Operations Assessments. Encourage the offices for WHUS, USG, Daily Campus, SUBOG, and UCTV to engage in an operational assessment and presentation with the Office of Environmental Policy.
  3. Duplicity Default. Departments will contact SAIT to reset their printers where possible to default double-sided printing.
  4. Paper goods. The committee will research paper alternatives and send out an email suggesting sustainable alternatives for staff use.
  5. HESA Education on Sustainability. Julie will create a packet of web-based materials including web-sites, accessible free webinars, operational definitions, research and background on the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education to be used in the HESA management course.
  6. Recycling. Create methods to enhance recycling among Student Affairs Staff.
  7. Earth Day. Develop methods of outreach to staff to participate in Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22, 2009.
  8. Outreach Education and the Eco House. Discover methods to coordinate outreach education on sustainable practices with the Living and Learning Community Eco House.
